US auto safety inspectors have opened an inquiry into the Model Y car’s steering wheel detachment issue after receiving two reports about the problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Agency reports that more than 120,000 automobiles from the 2023 model year are apparently included in the probe. The agency asserts that in both instances, the button holding the steering wheel and assisting with steering was missing when the Model Y was given to clients.
This particular model’s steering wheel was supported by other components of the automobile, but because it lacked a button, it detached from the rest of the car and fell off. According to the agency’s documents, both events involved autos that were still in their infancy. The Model Y is a sports utility vehicle that combines characteristics of automobiles that are primarily used for daily passenger use as well as characteristics of cars that are also ideal for driving in various terrains, such as the desert.
Investigators are looking into a variety of issues, including the sheer volume of complaints, the quantity of affected vehicles, and Tesla’s production process. The Model Y is Tesla’s most popular vehicle.
According to a Tesla repair center, the modification would cost roughly $104 to complete. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has declared that the next-generation compact car his business is developing will function primarily in autonomous mode, keeping with a pledge he made in 2020.
