American Honda Motor Co. recently issued a recall for nearly 721,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a potential defect in the high-pressure fuel pump, which could develop cracks and cause fuel leaks, increasing the risk of fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The affected vehicles include specific 2023-2024 Honda Accord and Accord Hybrid models, 2023-2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid models, and 2025 Honda Civic and Civic Hybrid models, manufactured between November 2022 and September 2024. Honda is notifying owners, with letters expected by December 4, 2024, advising them to visit a dealer for inspection or replacement if needed.
The issue first came to Honda’s attention in February 2023, prompting an investigation after a warranty claim highlighted the problem. Through continued assessment and collaboration with its fuel pump supplier, Hitachi Astemo, Honda confirmed the presence of a fuel leak risk and halted shipments of affected vehicles in September 2024. As a preventive measure, Honda initiated a voluntary recall in October. Despite 145 warranty claims, no injuries have been reported.
This recall marks Honda’s second recall in October and its 12th recall for 2024, although significantly fewer than the recalls issued by competitors such as Ford (52) and Stellantis (54).
