For the first time, Porsche, the car manufacturer, has fueled a 911 using a novel synthetic fuel made from water and thin air. The manufacturer invested in Highly Innovative Fuels, the firm that created EFuel, as insurance against having to switch to all-electric vehicles in the zero-carbon future.
The company manufactures the gasoline at a wind-powered facility in Punta Arenas, Chile, which is close to the southernmost part of South America and has an average 270 days of wind each year. The fuel produces methane, which transforms into a fuel that functions similarly to gasoline, by combining carbon removed from the atmosphere with hydrogen obtained from water.
According to a Porsche representative, the 911 used to demonstrate requires no modifications and can be utilized with practically any gasoline-powered vehicle. The pilot plant’s annual production is currently 34,342 gallons, but by the end of this decade, it will increase to 145.3 million gallons. Initially, Porsche will use it for specific projects, like as gasoline for the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup racing series, as its production costs are today $45 per gallon, but by 2026, they will be less than $8.
It is basically a net-zero fuel and might be permitted for widespread usage under future emissions regulations because it requires the same amount of carbon dioxide to generate as it does to emit in its emissions. In order to maintain the performance and aural entertainment advantages of internal combustion engines in their products, Porsche, other sports car manufacturers, and even the Formula 1 series have looked into its use.
Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, recently revealed to Fox News Digital that he is also highly interested in his brand.
“This is something that we are still looking into, we have to see what the legislature is going to say in the next couple of years if there is an opportunity or a window open also for those types of cars with hybrids still in the 30s by utilizing synthetic fuel,” Winkelmann said.
