Ford’s Mustang lineup continues to evolve, and this time, it introduces a brand-new performance trim that’s bound to leave a lasting impression. Meet the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse – a name that doesn’t rely on nostalgia but instead, lets its power and performance do the talking.
Unlike previous generations that tapped into iconic nameplates, the seventh-generation Mustang introduces a refreshing performance trim known as the Dark Horse. This model isn’t burdened by historical expectations, allowing it to forge its path in the Mustang legacy. Ford’s intention is clear: let the car’s performance speak for itself, and boy, does it deliver.

The heart of the Dark Horse lies in its engine – the most potent naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 in Mustang history. This powerhouse Coyote engine charms drivers with its exhilarating performance. Equipped with forged piston connecting rods from the GT500 and specific software tuning, the engine produces an impressive 500 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque. This marks a significant increase of 20 hp and 3 lb-ft compared to the current GT model.
While the Dark Horse’s torque delivery may not be as aggressive at low RPMs as some of its supercharged or turbocharged counterparts, it offers enough power to accelerate purposefully without causing the Mustang to become unruly. Torque builds steadily in a linear fashion, peaking at 4,900 rpm and maintaining its force all the way to the redline.
To fully experience the Dark Horse’s potential, drivers are encouraged to push the revs past 5,000 rpm. At higher revolutions, the V8 engine truly shines, delivering exhilarating acceleration. This experience is further enhanced when paired with the Tremec six-speed manual transmission. The manual transmission boasts tight, quick throws, automatic rev matching, and the inclusion of a no-lift-shift feature, making for a sublime driving experience. Although a 10-speed automatic option is available and commendable, the six-speed manual remains the preferred choice for true driving enthusiasts.
The Mustang Dark Horse impresses not only on paper but also on the road. Even before entering the cabin, the Dark Horse commands attention with its aggressive muscle car aesthetics. Its menacing appearance is the most captivating of all seventh-generation Mustangs. The front-end design addresses the criticisms of the EcoBoost and GT models with captivating black accents under the headlights and snarling nostril intakes – a nod to the racing horse’s iconic nostrils. The rear of the Dark Horse, especially when equipped with the bold wing, complements the car’s aggressive design.
Inside, the Dark Horse follows a minimalist approach rather than indulging in luxury. The base Dark Horse features numerous hard plastic trim pieces, which might be an understandable sacrifice considering the car’s performance-oriented nature. However, the Premium model offers better-quality materials, including upscale leather and stitching.
The optional Recaro bucket seats are surprisingly comfortable, offering excellent lumbar support and a refined leather finish. These seats, while aggressively bolstered for track-ready driving, lack power adjustments to keep weight down. A balance between comfort and weight is struck, although some might prefer additional adjustability.
The Dark Horse’s interior also showcases Ford’s tech advancements. A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch touchscreen display constitute the new tech suite, replacing some of the retro interior elements. Ford’s latest infotainment system is user-friendly and highly customizable, and a nod to the past is retained with the inclusion of Fox Body gauges from the base and GT Mustangs. Additionally, Dark Horse-specific graphics add an extra touch of exclusivity.
The Dark Horse delivers an engaging driving experience on the road. Equipped with a standard MagneRide adaptive suspension, the Dark Horse offers varying levels of softness from Normal mode to Track. Even in Normal mode, the ride might not be plush, but it’s a necessary compromise to ensure precise handling. Harshness over rough roads is noticeable but not excessively discomforting.
On the track at the Charlotte Motor Speedway’s challenging “Roval” course, the Dark Horse truly comes to life. Its powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine shines as it tackles the high-banked corners with confidence and a resounding roar that evokes memories of classic stock cars. Equipped with the Handling pack, the Dark Horse exhibits remarkable agility, thanks to features like sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires, stiffer springs, larger anti-roll bars, and an integrated Gurney flap on the rear wing. The result is a Mustang that tackles corners with precision and confidence.
As with any high-performance car, the steering plays a crucial role. The Dark Horse’s steering is quick, allowing for precise cornering, but it lacks some of the communicative nature of its predecessor. In the most aggressive Track setting, the steering is boosted to the point of feeling vague on center and lacking in cornering feedback. However, switching to Sport+ or Track mode improves other aspects, such as suspension and throttle tuning. The added stiffness in Track mode sharpens the car’s cornering ability, while quicker throttle response provides greater control when exiting corners.
In terms of pricing, the base Mustang Dark Horse starts at $60,865, excluding the $1,595 destination fee. Opting for the Dark Horse Premium model, which includes color-matching stitching, improved materials, and additional aesthetic enhancements, pushes the price to $64,860.
The Dark Horse presents itself as a strong contender, competing favorably against the likes of the BMW M2 in terms of price and performance. Whether on the open road or the track, the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse confidently asserts its position as a worthy addition to the Mustang lineage. Without relying on nostalgia, the Dark Horse proves that it has what it takes to secure a prominent place in Mustang history for years to come.
